About the Centre

The Centre for White Space Communications is a multi-disciplinary industry and academic centre investigating and undertaking R&D on the use and impact of ‘White Space’ spectrum. Set up in 2011 with seed funding from the Scottish Funding Council, the Centre is hosted in the University of Strathclyde, with the University of the Highlands and Islands and the University of Stirling as partner universities. The Centre held its Inaugural Event in January 2013.

Opening of the TV white spaces heralds the arrival of a new era in wireless communications. Recognizing the global significance of this opportunity, the Centre for White Space Communications aims to be an internationally recognized centre of excellence for research and technology development in this rapidly developing field.

A key activity of the Centre is research and development in the engineering and technological issues associated with the use and applicability of White Space spectrum and cognitive radio. The Centre builds upon more than 30 years of extensive experience and expertise within the University of Strathclyde in the areas of mobile communications and signal processing technologies, and is currently working with a number of industry partners on a range of projects related to White Space technology. A key aim is to further increase such engagement with industry and to firmly establish the Centre as an internationally-recognized centre of excellence.

Alongside the strong technological focus of the Centre, complementary work on the social and environmental impacts of White Space technology will be carried out, especially in relation to its applicability to the provision of improved broadband and mobile communications in rural areas. This work will be led mainly by the Centre’s partner institutions, which have extensive expertise in these areas. This is a topic of particular relevance for Scotland, but is also of relevance for rural (and urban) communities in many other parts of the world.
