Cooperative MIMO Relay

Supported by Motorola Mobility (now part of Google), we have continued work on cooperative MIMO relay communications. The considered system consists of a set of transmit antennas at the source, and a multi-antenna receiver at the destination. The system architecture makes use of intermittent transmitters in a single relay layer, which we assume to be an amplify-forward scheme, i.e. no symbol decoding or detection is performed at the relay layer. In general, such schemes offer enhanced system performance with increased data throughput per afforded transmit power.

While the overall aim of this research is somewhat removed from the practicalities of the rural broadband trials running within the Centre, it may provide some future benchmark as to what performance MIMO relay systems may achieve in the ideal case.
